What is GIS?

You may even not know but look around, and you can find GIS everywhere – in more and less obvious ways. From online maps to air traffic control, from parcel tracking to land use analysis, geographical information systems (GIS) have come to enhance every major aspect of our economy, including water industry. GIS is no longer a standalone concept or system, it’s a geospatial way of working that has firmly embedded itself in our lives as a response to the growing need for information.

How does it work?

Geographic information systems transform complex information into focused geographic insights and intuitive maps and figures. GIS technology can be used for scientific investigations, resource management, and development planning, among other things. For example, a GIS might be used to find wetlands that need protection from pollution. GIS turns your imagery into point clouds and 3D meshes inside ArcGIS, where it can be extracted, modeled and shared.  You can easily control and share this information through cloud, web and mobile technology, to both your field workers, control stations, clients and the public.

  • DVRPC Transportation Signage Inventory TRENTON, NJ (ASSET INVENTORY) - Rodriguez Consulting LLC (Rodriguez), under contract with Taylor Wiseman & Taylor (TWT), provided geospatial and transportation asset inventory services for Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC) for the Mercer County Signage asset inventory project. The purpose of the project was to assess the locations of existing county-owned traffic signs and gather retroreflectivity properties of the signs and its height  with offset.  Rodriguez ContributionRodriguez was responsible for providing geospatial and asset inventory services:Field Data Collection– Rodriguez utilized Mercer County Sign Management Application software to build a GIS database of Mercer County`s traffic signs and collect digital photos.   • PWD High Pressure Fire Hydrant Inventory PHILADELPHIA, PA (ASSET INVENTORY) - Rodriguez Consulting LLC (Rodriguez), under contract with Hatch Mott MacDonald, LLC (HMM), provided geospatial services for the Philadelphia Water Department (PWD) for a high pressure fire service (HPFS) asset inventory project. The PWD decommissioned the fifty-six-mile HPFS system in 2005 as the system had been rendered obsolete.  The purpose of the asset inventory was to assess the location of  existing inactive HPFS hydrants and the potential impact that removing the hydrants would have on the surrounding pavement, street furniture, and ADA ramps. Rodriguez ContributionRodriguez was responsible for providing geospatial and asset inventory services:Application Design  – Rodriguez utilized the Fulcrum data collection system to store, manage, and collect hydrant data and digital photos.  A ...

  • Egg Harbor Township MUA - GIS Data Conversion EGG HARBOR TWP, NJ (GIS DATA CONVERSION) - Rodriguez Consulting, LLC worked as a subcontractor on a Egg Harbor Township Municipal Utilities Authority (EHTMUA) project that involved the creation of a seamless, digital, and intelligent map of the EHTMUA sewer system (i.e. pipes, manholes, etc.) and rapidly making this information available to staff via software tools that are easy to use.  Rodriguez was responsible for creating a sewer GIS database design based on a database design that Rodriguez developed for the Atlantic County Utilities Authority (ACUA), a regional authority that provides wastewater treatment for the EHTMUA.  The EHTMUA GIS incorporated the sewer assets maintained by the EHTMUA and was expanded to incorporate the assets maintained by ACUA.  The GIS database ...
