Homecoming event for an army soldier
His colleagues celebrated his return from a 10-month tour of Afghanistan with a special surprise party and homecoming. The consulting firm’s office at 1301 N. Second Street was decorated in yellow ribbons while members of Warrior Watch cheered the soldier as he pulled up to the building at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 3.
Sherwood’s boss, Louis Rodriguez, P.E., planned the surprise welcome, which has been in the works since he found out about his return.
A resident of Newtown Square, Sherwood served in the 333rd Engineer Company as a First Lieutenant, where his company finished 156 construction missions, conducted 167 convoys and did six demilitarization missions in 27 locations throughout Afghanistan, according to a statement from the military.
”Matthew Sherwood is an exceptional young man. When we recruited Matt in 2012, he was a recent graduate from the University of Delaware who had also completed an ROTC program,” Rodriguez said. "Although it was difficult to lose Matt for a year, we were aware of his commitment and willing to do what was necessary to support his dedication to our country."
The media was invited to meet Matt Sherwood and his wife Krista as he returns for his first day back at work. Local businesses have contributed food and signs to help welcome home Sherwood. Also, the staff at Rodriguez Consulting bought “welcome home” gifts for Krista and Matt’s new house. (It’s a new BBQ grill, but don't tell him!)
